Eco-Friendly Wedding Tips
With so many people concerned about the environment, the thought of having a lavish wedding affair may be met with feelings of guilt. But not every wedding has to be an environmental disaster. Here are some tips for a greener wedding celebration:
- Beeswax Candles. They not only create a lovely glow and set a romantic mood, but they're much easier on the environment than yards of white lights and other lighting.
- Recycled Stationery. Whether it's invitations, programs or placeholder cards, recycled paper is a great way to keep new waste from being created.
- Email Invitations. If you want to go the extra mile with decreasing waste, then use email invitations. It's the way of the future.
- Organic Attire. Select designers who use natural, non-synthetic fabrics, or even refashion vintage and second-hand attire to cut down on manufacturing.
- Organic Flowers. Some florists carry flowers that have been locally grown and haven't been exposed to pesticides and other chemicals. Ask your local florists for details.
- Biodegradable Confetti. If you must use confetti at all, why not rose petals or rice instead of paper and tinsel?
- Carpool. Cut down on emissions by driving to the venue with your wedding party or family. It will also make the journey more memorable. Encourage your guests to carpool, too, or hire a bus to take everyone from the wedding to the reception site.
- Local Wedding. Reduce gas consumption by choosing a venue that's close to you and the majority of your guests. If the reception site is at the same place, then that's a bonus.
- Acoustic Music. Instead of having music that uses lots of equipment, why not hire acoustic musicians? There's something charming about live music at a wedding.
- Forego Favors. If there's something you can cut out of your list as well as your budget, it's favors. If you can't do without, use organic, recycled and fair-trade products. Or announce at the wedding that in lieu of favors, a donation has been made to your favorite charity in honor of your guests.
- Eco Venues. Check out the venue's policy on environmental issues. Some venues are committed to recycling and using organic and local ingredients.
- Digital Photos. Hire a photographer who will take digital photos to cut excess film waste. Plus it makes it much easier to email friends and family your photos!
